There are many different reasons people want to save money. There are dreams we all have that will require a bit of funding to acquire. In fact, some dreams will need more than just a little funding. To get those dreams to become reality, we need to find the best ways to save money that won’t make us feel like we’ve missed out. That fear of missing out can cause people to overspend during a sale or go out for a night on the town with friends when it’s not in the budget. Instead, get into the best money saving habits so that while your friends are at the local bar, you’re in an exotic location sending snaps or posting to Instagram.

DIY-ouTube

YouTube is a place where people go to get entertained by creators of all different types. But there are also tutorials upon tutorials and probably even a tutorial on how to make a tutorial. What that means is, instead of paying thousands for someone to retile your bathroom or hundreds on a simple oil change, do it yourself. If the task is just too overwhelming, go ahead and spend, but search for the best deal. If it’s not overwhelming, you could come out of the situation having learned something new and you would save money.

End the Impulse

Impulse buying is one of the worst ways and most common ways people waste money. In fact, most stores know the impulse very well. To take advantage of that impulse, stores will put random products right next to the register so you’ll grab them on a whim. Stop the impulse by thinking about that money for later. What could you buy with that $5 when it turns into $10 or $20? You could take that $5 and invest it into an interest account and double it over time, triple it after more time and so on.

While store impulse shopping is easier to end, just leave the store, online shopping is a different and more prevalent story. We all have access to the stores we love everywhere we go and that means more chances to spend. Next time you find an amazing pair of shoes, bookmark them and come back later. Try for the next day or even a few days later. When you come back, gauge how much you felt the need to buy those shoes compared to when you first saw them. Hopefully, it’s less important but if not, and you can afford it, go for it.

Give in at the Right Time

If you find that you just can’t save money because you need to spend on something, you need to shop, do it right. Spend on products that will actually be good investments like computers, beds, even a gym membership could work. These things will help keep you healthy, productive and happy. Ultimately, they will all be worth the money.

Who You Know

Who you know is important to many aspects of life, even your spending. If you’re hanging out with friends who really care about what you wear, where you live, you’re hanging out with the wrong people. These people will make you feel pressured to buying lavish things even if you can’t afford them. Go back to grade school and remember that materialistic things will fade away and not matter someday.

Date Night

Make a date night every week, preferably at the end/beginning of every week. Instead of wine and steak at a restaurant, your setting will be your computer or tablet and a calculator. Go through what you’ve spent during the week, budget for the next week, and add some money to a savings account. The goal is to have a set amount of money you’d be willing to spend every week, if you have anything left over, add that to a savings account.

Credit vs Debit

Your credit card is a direct extension of your debit card, make sure you see it that way. Do not let your credit card balance fool you into thinking you can afford something. Remember, that is a very short time loan and will cost more the longer you wait to pay it off. Think about it this way, that purchase is too expensive to make right now, in two months, it will cost even more if you pay for it with your credit card.

Define “Need”

A need is something that is required, necessary, or even an obligation. Ask yourself, is what you’re about to buy required, necessary, or an obligation to your health and survival? If not, skip it this time. There is nothing wrong with buying things you don’t need, that you just want. But maybe it’s better to use those things as a reward system after you’ve earned it.

Go Green

Everything is digital and spending money is easier than ever. But if your goal is to save money, things that make spending easier are bad. Go green, carry spending cash with you and use that throughout the day instead. By using cash, you will physically watch money leave your wallet and that will make it harder to spend.

Leave it

Your savings account is important and you should be aware what you have in your savings. However, make it a once a month thing to know, not daily. If you know that you have plenty of money in your savings, you’ll feel more comfortable spending. If you’re not sure, you will have a little more fear when spending money. You can save money by leaving it alone in your savings account, not dipping into it every chance you get.
