This recipe requires a lot of the basics, but we will be taking things even further. The recipe is still easy to put together, so no need to worry there. You will need the basics like Chex Mix, chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter.

But we want to make this a treat-filled snack mix, so we will be adding things to it. You will need vanilla, mini pretzel balls, and candy corn is necessary for Halloween. In fact, let’s get in full Halloween swing with things like Halloween Oreos, Reese’s Pieces, and Halloween sprinkles.

Just don’t forget the powdered sugar, and to spice things up, we will use brownie mix.

Ingredients List

The ingredients for this Halloween puppy chow are extremely easy. In fact, most of the ingredients can be removed or replaced however you’d like. There are a few staple ingredients, though, that will serve as the base of your puppy chow recipe for any holiday. 

You will need Chex Rice Cereal, semisweet chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Those ingredients will create the base of your puppy chow. Everything else is here only to make it more of a themed treat specifically for Halloween. 

Mini pretzel balls, Halloween sprinkles, mini candy corn, Halloween Oreos, Reese’s Pieces, and brownie mix will turn this treat into a spooky one. Of course, you can replace all these ingredients with different things to make it Christmas puppy chow, Valentine’s Day puppy chow, St. Patrick’s Day puppy chow, and so on.

Halloween Puppy Chow Recipe Directions

Pour Chex cereal into a large bowl and set aside.

In a microwave-proof bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 30-120 seconds at a time, stirring every 30 seconds until the chocolate chips are completely melted and smooth. Stir in vanilla.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal and gently stir to coat, trying

not to crush the cereal.

In two-gallon size Ziploc baggies, pour the powdered sugar onto one and the brownie mix into the other. Divide the chocolate-covered Chex mix between the two baggies and then seal and shake to evenly coat all of the cereal.

Spread the cereal out of parchment paper to let the chocolate firm up a bit, for about 20 minutes in the freezer.

In a large bowl, combine the chocolate-coated cereal with pretzel balls, candy corn, Oreo pieces, Reese’s pieces & Halloween sprinkles. Store in an airtight container.

  • 10 Cups Chex Cereal
  • 1 1/2 Cups Semisweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Butter
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla
  • 1 12oz Bag Mini Pretzel Balls
  • 1 13oz Bag Mini Candy Corn
  • 1 Lb Halloween Oreos Slightly Chopped
  • 1 1/2 Cup Reese's Pieces
  • Halloween Sprinkles Any Sprinkles Will Do
  • 3/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
  • 3/4 Cup Brownie Mix Your Choice of Brand

Instructions
 

  • Pour Chex cereal into a large bowl and set aside.
  • In a microwave-proof bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 30-120 second at a time, stirring every 30 seconds until the chocolate chips are completely melted and smooth. Stir in the vanilla.
  • Pour the chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal and gently stir to coat, trying not to crush the cereal.
  • Pour the powdered sugar into a gallon-sized Ziploc and the brownie mix in another gallon-sized Ziploc baggie and divide the chocolate covered Chex cereal into the baggies. Seal the baggies making sure you leave plenty of air in the bags.
  • Shake the baggies to evenly coat the Chex cereal.
  • Spread the cereal out on parchment paper to let the chocolate firm up a bit, for about 20 minutes in the freezer.
  • In a large bowl, combine the chocolate coated cereal with pretzel balls, candy corn, Oreo pieces, Reese's Pieces, and Halloween sprinkles. Store in airtight container.
