Learning how to start your day the same way a successful person does could help lay the groundwork for your very own success.

Most people start their day in the same way. However, it would seem that successful people tend to do things a little differently. If we started to take a page out of their books, we may find success in our own lives. The idea is to learn how to start your day and to lay the groundwork each morning.

That groundwork will give you the footing you need to work towards your success. One thing to remember is that successful people are just that, people. There are a few differences in the path they take and some may have been successful at an early age.

But that doesn’t mean they are some sort of creatures from another planet. They are people, just like you, just like me. So what is stopping you from being as successful as they are?

How to Start Your Day | Wake Up Earlier

We all know that the early bird gets the worm. But let’s take a deep dive into what that means. When we first wake up, it takes some time to get ready mentally and physically. But imagine if you had your 10 am brain working at 8 am.

You will be able to use your critical thinking much earlier and for longer throughout the day. You may be surprised how waking up even just an hour earlier could change things for you.

Morning Routines

Want to know how to start your day? With routines. The founder of Paul Mitchell and Patron, Jean Paul DeJoria says that no matter where he is or what the day holds for him, he always starts it the same way. The idea is to take control of the first two hours of your day.

What lies ahead for you could be out of your control. But if you start your day in full control, you may be able to carry that control throughout the rest of your day.

Set a Tone

One of the best ways successful people start their days is by setting the tone for the day. All you need to do is read something positive. That positivity will carry you throughout the day. However, it is important to not pick up your phone or open your computer for at least the first hour of your day.

This is because you don’t want to start thinking about work until your mood is ready to handle it.

How to Start Your Day | Practice Gratitude

Speaking of setting the tone for the day, you can add gratitude to that tone as well. The idea here is simple, the first thing you should put out into the world is gratitude. Even if you have no reason to be grateful today, do it anyway.

The first person who calls you or the first person you speak to, say something nice. Tony Robbins, a motivational guru says that he starts each day by vocally listing out the things he is grateful for.

Ask Yourself, Are You Lucky?

Steve Jobs said, “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And when the answer has been ‘no’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

Ask yourself that same question and adjust as needed. If it worked for Steve Jobs, a man who got his start building a computer in a garage. Then, went on to change the world, it can work for you too.

Getting Enough Sleep

There is one nightly routine that is also important, getting sleep. You should start your day earlier but that also means that you should hit the pillow earlier too. Make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. If you can’t do that, adjust your schedule and find ways to make it work.

Jeff Bezos aims to sleep 8 hours each night and avoids early meetings.

How to Start Your Day | Exercise

Figuring out how to start your day is much easier than you may think. Did you know that Bill Gates starts every single day by running on the treadmill while watching Teaching Company? Do a quick run around the block while listening to something positive.

You could also do some simple morning workouts while reading something positive or vocalizing what you’re grateful for.

Eat a Frog

Not literally but eat a frog. Mark Twain said, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” The idea is simple, schedule your toughest task for sometime in the morning. This is when your mental power will be at its strongest throughout the day.

But also, like Mark Twain said, what worse could happen if you finish your worse task early?

Meditate

If you want to know how to start your day like a successful person, meditation is the answer. Many different successful people from Oprah Winfrey to Jeff Weiner all start their days with meditation in their morning routine. Jeff Weiner says he used an app to help him learn how to meditate properly until it became like second nature to him.

How to Start Your Day | Wait for Coffee

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter and Square says he starts his day by waking up at 5 am, then exercising, then meditation, then coffee. You should wait about 4 hours before reaching for a cup of coffee after you wake up. The goal is to use your own mental power to wake up instead of relying on caffeine.

Dress Properly But Simply

Many of us are familiar with the iconic hoodie and jeans that Mark Zuckerberg wears daily. Zuckerberg says he does this intentionally. The idea is to not waste brain power on things that don’t really matter, like your outfit. Steve Jobs wore a black turtleneck and jeans and Barack Obama kept his suits simple as well.

Don’t waste energy or mental power on things that shouldn’t matter as much.

Set Priorities

Every task you have should have a set priority level. The best way to figure this out is to plan ahead and stay organized. After you’ve done your meditation, your workout, you’ve had a healthy breakfast, you avoided coffee, then you can look at your schedule.

Figure out what order things should be done today and don’t forget to eat the frog.

How to Start Your Day | Hydrate

Since we’ll be waiting until 9 am to get a cup of coffee, drink water instead. Health is important and should be the focus of your morning routine. Knowing how to start your day is knowing how to keep a healthy body and mind. After all, you can’t be successful from a hospital bed.

Start your day off with an 8-ounce glass of water and then another one after your workout.

Make it Work for You

The most important thing to remember is that everyone has things that work for them. For example, Oprah meditates while Bill Gates exercises. Find which ones work for you and add them to your routine. If waking up at 5 am isn’t for you, that’s fine.

Just make sure you wake up earlier than you did today. There is no set routine that will help you become successful, it is a combination of different routines that work best.

Create Habits

All of the above are great ideas but you need to stick to them for them to work. Making all of the above habits will ensure that your body and mind can adjust to the new routine. You will soon start to see the differences and you will not want them to get messed up by not doing them regularly.
