The Crocodile Dundee movies list is full of classics that everyone can enjoy while they learn a bit about Australia. Think about Australia and its citizens. There is a stereotypical Australian that we see in our heads as Americans.

It is a wild place filled with scary animals and insects. Beautiful naturescapes and beaches make it a wonderful place to visit. But those scary animals and insects have created a rugged yet carefree culture.

Australians are just built differently; the men are manly, the women are tougher, and all of that is entirely wrong. But where did these ideas come from? We can’t exactly look at the Crocodile Dundee movies list and pinpoint where that generalization originated.

That’s because it didn’t originate from those movies. In fact, those generalizations played a significant role in the creation of the franchise. The storyline came from and stars Paul Hogan.

Hogan was visiting New York City and thought, “He’s a mythical outback Australian who does exist in part—the frontiersman who walks through the bush, picking up snakes and throwing them aside, living off the land who can ride horses and chop down trees and has that simple, friendly, laid-back philosophy.

It’s like the image the Americans have of us, so why not give them one?” And give them one he did. The franchise has become part of movie history, even if it was never considered one of the greatest comedy franchises.

Still, some people look back fondly on the franchise with an almost nostalgic outlook.

Crocodile Dundee is a Paul Hogan creation based on the simple idea of dropping an Australian frontiersman in the middle of New York City. The original movie was released in 1986 and was directed by Peter Faiman.

The original starred Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski. Other notable cast included John Meillon, Mark Blum, Michael Lombard, David Gulpilil, and Reginald Veljohnson.

Linda Kozlowski plays American reporter Sue, who travels to Australia to interview a man who just survived a crocodile attack and runs a safari park. This man was Michael J. ‘Crocodile’ Dundee or Mick.

Sue grows fond of Mick in Australia and invites him back to visit the Big Apple. A clash of cultures ensues as a bushman from Australia is dropped into a big American city.

The movie was nominated for multiple awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Comedy, and Best Supporting Actress, and it won the award for Best Leading Actor in a Comedy.

Crocodile Dundee II

The original movie was considered a hit, making 328 million dollars at the box office worldwide. The movie was meant to be a way to bridge the American and Australian cultures with good-natured comedy.

Drop a naïve Dundee in the concrete jungle and see what happens, not a bad idea. But the entire world enjoyed it, and so, two years later, Crocodile Dundee II was released.

This movie brought back some original players like Paul Hogan, Linda Kozlowski, and John Meillon; Russell Boyd directed it. The movie picks up where the last one left off, with Sue being a reporter and Mick still in the city.

This time, Sue has solid evidence against New York drug lords. Mick decides Sue would be safer in Australia, so they return to Mick’s home. Fortunately for us, those drug lords follow them to Australia, and so Mick must use his tough, manly man Australian skills once again.

Unfortunately, this movie was not well received, with critics saying things like “Secrets of a sloppy sequel-making, Number 47: simply transplant the same script to a different location.”

Another critic said, “None of the energy of Mick Dundee’s first foray has crept into this sequel…” There are no awards to list for this one, and you may think it was the end of the Dundee movies.

But you’d be wrong. The Crocodile Dundee movies list continues.

There is something to be said about nostalgia. Of course, whether it’s a good or bad thing is up for debate. Either way, nostalgia seems to be the deciding factor in bringing back the Dundee franchise 13 years after the first sequel.

This time, the cast is entirely new, with only Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski reprising their roles, and Simon Wincer directed it. This movie takes place years after we left Mick and Sue in Australia.

Mick and Sue are married this time, but Sue needs to return to LA to take over a newspaper. Let’s not forget that Mick and Sue have a son named Micky. Mick decides this is an excellent opportunity for the whole family to see another part of the world, so they travel together to Los Angeles.

However, the former chief of the L.A. newspaper that Sue is replacing was murdered. It is up to Sue and Mick to find out what happened and why. Unfortunately, this movie also got terrible reviews, with one critic saying, “…where nostalgia and comedy are run through a food processor until they become a flavorless paste.”

Still, the movie was nominated for a Razzie award. For those who don’t know, the Razzies was a fake award show that gave awards to bad movies. Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles was nominated for Worst Remake of Sequel but lost.

Unfortunately, we still aren’t at the end of the Crocodile Dundee movies list.

Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home

Do you remember that Sue and Mick had a young son named Micky? Well, Micky is starring in his own movie directed by Russell Boyd again. Boyd was the director of Crocodile Dundee II.

This short film has a runtime of 3 minutes but still counts as a part of the franchise. This short film stars Danny McBride and Paul Hogan with guest stars Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher, Liam Hemsworth, and Hugh Jackman.

The short film was made as an ad campaign for Australian tourism. The plot is that Crocodile Dundee goes missing in the outback, and it is up to his son to find him.

Unfortunately, his son grew up in Los Angeles, so he must tap into the Australian roots he gained from his Australian outback expert father to make it through. Obviously, this short film did not win any awards, but it belongs on the Crocodile Dundee movies list because short films are movies, too.

Crocodile Dundee Film Series

The series gave Paul Hogan a breakout role in a joyful movie that shows both Australia and New York love. Of course, you can never beat the original movie, though the Crocodile Dundee films tried.

There is little to signal that anyone thought the movie would win an Academy Award, especially since critics are often high-society snoots who don’t understand the awesomeness of dealing with a crocodile with your bare hands.

The first film did very well for that very reason. People enjoyed the original Crocodile Dundee film, even if that love didn’t carry over to the sequels. It was an action-comedy film with the ingredients to make people laugh.

Americans saw that New York wasn’t a bad city, just a different kind of jungle. And now, we have the franchise to look back on and blame for why we think Australians love putting “shrimp on the barbie.”
